Initiatives in Canada
British Columbia
The Association for Community Education in British Columbia is dedicated to fostering and promoting Community Education and Community Schools in British Columbia. ACEbc has been active in British Columbia since 1975 in the areas of community education, community school development, advocacy and liaison, organization of workshops and conferences, publishing resource materials and conducting community school research.
Saskatchewan
In 1980, the Saskatchewan Community School Program was developed by Saskatchewan Learning (then Saskatchewan Education). During the early 1980's a group of Community Education professionals formed the Saskatchewan Community Schools Association. The mandate of the Association was, and continues to be:
- To promote the Community School concept;
- To communicate and disseminate information;
- To provide in-service;
- To be a mutual support.
Manitoba
The Community Schools Partnership Initiative (CSPI) was launched in January 2005 under the jurisdiction of Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth (MECY). The main goal of Community Schools is to help communities achieve a new level of success, by encouraging the involvement of parents, community leaders, and community agencies as “partners” — providing a range of services and supports that any given community needs. In doing this, Community Schools offer a new centre of activity in a neighbourhood.
Ontario
Community Use of Schools: Ontario's schools are community hubs where all people can stay active, gather to learn, and participate in the activities of community-based organizations.
Prince Edward Island
Community Schools in PEI: The Department of Innovation & Advanced Learning provides the Association with core funding annually. Over 3000 Islanders attend community schools programming each winter across the province. Courses such as guitar, arts, crafts, introductory computer, and many more are offered to all Islanders.
