Better Together
Through Innovation

Faced with declining enrolment in its elementary schools, Boundary School District used available school space to create family centres. Each family centre has an office, with a kitchenette and phone line, for parents and community members to work. While some schools use their space for afterschool activities such as Girl Guides or Boy Scouts, others host the daytime services of dentists, public health nurses and other professionals.

Neighbourhood Learning Centres are for Families

NEIGHBOURHOOD LEARNING CENTRES make sense for students, families, schools and communities. Children thrive with attention from caring adults in safe environments. Parents delight in their children’s development and enjoy interacting with other parents. By opening welcoming spaces to gather, and offering helpful programs and services, Neighbourhood Learning Centres enable the support and personal connections that help families across generations and make communities stronger.

Growing Together
Neighbourhood Learning Centres grow as families and communities work together to find out how to best help each other. Whether it is after school programs, child care options, parenting resources, recreation facilities or health services, NLCs are places where families can belong, learn together and raise happy, healthy children.

How are Neighbourhood Learning Centres developed?
Your neighbourhood school may already have the basic elements of a Neighbourhood Learning Centre. To help it reach its full potential, become involved with its planning, take part in consultations and share your vision with others. Each NLC is unique, and develops according to the character and aspirations of the community it serves.
